Sharon had been hospitalized 15 times in 6 month period.

Dr. Busch (Sharon’s Psychiatrist):
I started working with Sharon probably in 2002 or 2003; she was very sick, she was depressed, felt very hopeless, had problems hearing voices, and wanted to kill herself.

Dr. Wood (Amerigroup Medical Director Behavioral Health):
We identified a group of our members who were patients in hospitals and seeing a number of psychiatrists. They were admitted and readmitted to the hospitals. What we found was that each time they were admitted to a hospital, they got a different diagnosis, they got a different set of medications, and they had a lot of difficulty in remaining out of the hospital.

Dr. Busch (Sharon’s Psychiatrist):
In Sharon’s case, she was in the hospital so much that she really wasn’t getting any better. And what’s the point in ex pending those what our precious resources in TX? The Medicaid funds in Texas are very limited and that’s why they’ve hired Amerigroup to help monitor and manage those things.

Sharon became one of Amerigroup’s new behavioral health program call Rising Star.

Dr. Busch (Sharon’s Psychiatrist):
I think one of the most effective interventions for Sharon was to develop a one hospital/one doctor relationship for her. And then we were able to work with her more closely to identify what we needed to do to help her function independently of the hospital.

Sharon (Amerigroup Member):
I can do a lot for myself. I go to the stores; I can take my son places, and go to church on Sunday with my son.

Dr. Wood (Amerigroup Medical Director Behavioral Health):
One of the happy outcomes of this is we have Dr Gerald Busch. He had been working with a lot of the members that we identified in this population. He now is working for Amerigroup as Associate Medical Director.
