What kind of care do people with disabilities want?

Amerigroup created an independent National Advisory Board to find out. It’s headed by noted activist Lex Frieden.
Lex Frieden:
What probably was my first clue that this was the real deal, was when I heard the top-level corporate executives, the President of the company, Vice President’s, Senior VP’s, talking about members. It took me a second to realize that they’re talking about the same people other companies condescendingly refer to as benefit recipient’s or patient’s. You know the last time I was a patient was the last time I was in a hospital, several years ago. I’m not a patient. And the people this company serves are very seldom patients. We are people and we happen to have disabilities, and because of that, we need to have help. So it was for me delightful to discover a group of business people who understood the concept of independent living. People with disabilities are not without abilities. I can’t do a lot of things; there are a darn lot more things I can do than I can’t do. Let the member decide if they want to live in an institution or out of it. And if they want to live in the community, enable them to do that. Help them find the means to do so. Our National Advisory Board is taking on the challenge of challenging Amerigroup leadership to think big and think ahead.
