Nancy (Amerigroup Nurse Case Manager):
My name is Nancy Jones I am a pediatric case manager for Amerigroup community care. I assist members with finding doctors, finding specialist to provide the services that their children need.

Nancy (Amerigroup Nurse Case Manager):
On the phone:
Amerigroup, this is Nancy may I help you.

Nancy (Amerigroup Nurse Case Manager):
I got a call from the doctor’s office that I had to come see this little girl.

Nancy (Amerigroup Nurse Case Manager):
So today I get to meet Makayla for the first time.

Denise (Makayla’s Mom / Amerigroup Member):
When I had my daughter I was like 18 yrs old. And especially as a first time parent you just feel like your baby is going to come out normal, and it does not always work out that way. When she was born, Makayla, had both her hips out of the socket, she had clubbed feet, and her knees didn’t bend right. Right off the back they recommended Dr. Brock. Which is her doctor still today.

Dr. Brock, Makayla’s Surgeon, discussing with Registered Nurse Armonde:
The big curve is up here. You can’t rotate that.

Armonde (Registered Nurse):
When they first came in, I saw this young child with a baby and I thought all my goodness the Lord has really tested her.

Dr. Brock (Makayla’s Surgeon):
She was born with multiple orthopedic problems, she had a dislocated hip, she had two severe club foot deformities. The most striking thing was that both of her knees were actually dislocated backwards to the point that her foot was up near her ears.

Armonde (Registered Nurse):
I just thought this leg would never bend. You could see that the mom was very scared.

Denise (Makayla’s Mom / Amerigroup Member):
You see somebody that you love so much in the hospital with needles stuck in her, in a cast. It doesn’t just like hurt you it kind of humbles you too. She had about six surgeries, three major surgeries. She has been to the doctor over 150 times.

In 2008, Nancy Jones became Makayla’s case manager.
She coordinated all of Makayla’s appointments with doctors, physical therapists, and specialists. It was unclear whether Makayla would ever be able to walk.

Nancy (Amerigroup Nurse Case Manager):
Armonde.

Armonde (Registered Nurse):
Hey. Thanks for coming.

Makayla is now three years old and due for a checkup. Her doctors have asked Nancy to join them. Today she will meet Makayla for the first time.

Denise (Makayla’s Mom / Amerigroup Member):
This is Makayla.

Nancy (Amerigroup Nurse Case Manager):
Oh sweetheart I have heard so much about you.

Armonde (Registered Nurse):
When I first saw her, I never thought she would walk.
Did I think she would ever be able to run, jump and play at the park, no.

Nancy (Amerigroup Nurse Case Manager):
Oh, sweetheart. You’re beautiful.

Armonde (Registered Nurse):
You know I think that’s the stuff miracles are made of.

Nancy (Amerigroup Nurse Case Manager):
To see everything that we do everyday come together and be successful for this little girl. This will be apart of me for the rest of my life, because seeing her, seeing her playing, seeing her walking was amazing.

Denise (Makayla’s Mom / Amerigroup Member):
Give her a big hug.
