We grow ideas from the ground up

There's nothing more powerful than a big idea. It can change everything. But whereas some ideas proverbially come "out of the blue," we find that our best ideas come up from the street.

The people at Amerigroup who work hands-on with members in their communities are solving problems every day, one case at a time, to help them lead healthier lives. It’s a practical approach that shows us very quickly what works and what doesn’t.

Experience is a great teacher. And it also leads to some of our best ideas. For instance, time and again, we’ve seen that what sounds expensive can end up saving money for our customers while improving care for our members.

Take our vans. If people can’t get to the doctor when they need to, they can end up in the ER. So buying vans to take members to their appointments turns out to be a helpful, cost-efficient solution in some urban settings.

See specialists. In rural areas where hospitals are few and far between, we had the idea to connect to telemedicine networks so local doctors can get expert help on the spot from specialists in major teaching hospitals.

Build a clinic. We saw that sickle cell patients in Baltimore were going in and out of hospitals seeing a bunch of different doctors who may or may not have dealt with their disease before. We thought, wouldn't it make more sense to have one clinic just dedicated to sickle cell patients and we put our money where our idea was; we provided seed money to Johns Hopkins to create just such a clinic.
